Hello friends, today in this article we will know about 5 such system software and some examples of system software.

If you want to get more information about system software then you can read it. After reading this article, you will not have to search any other site about the importance of system software and examples of system software.

You all must know that the software is designed with many instructions and programs, which can perform properly on the computer and can manage the computer hardware well.

In this way, 2 types of software are used in the computer. System software and Application software. So, today we learn full details of types of system software & some examples of system software.

What is System software?

System software is computer software that is responsible for managing and controlling the entire computer hardware. Because of this the computer can start. It provides a platform for other software to run in the computer so that the software can run smoothly.

System software is made up of many programs. Many features and functions are attached to it, due to which input/output operation, memory management, and many other computer operations have been managed. So let’s know about the types of system software.

5 Types of system software

There are 5 types of system software.

  • Operating system
  • Device driver
  • Utility programs
  • Programming language translator
  • Security programs

Operating System

An operating system (OS) is a type of system software that helps run computer hardware as well as other application software. Due to it being user-friendly, all computer users can easily operate the operating system. Everything in the operating system is in a structured manner.

If you do not have an operating system installed on your computer, then you will not be able to start the computer under any circumstances. It keeps the computer password protected while providing security.

Examples of operating systems: Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, Chrome OS, Android, iOS, etc.

Device Driver

A device driver is software that acts as an interface between the operating system and all the devices connected to your computer. This allows the user to operate that device from the operating system.

Different devices require different drivers. Like audio driver for audio, VGA driver for graphics, USB driver for USB etc.

If you want to check the drivers of your computer, then you have to press Windows + R button simultaneously. Only then the Run popup will open on the screen. In that, you have to type “devmgmt.msc” and press enter button. After that, the option of “Device Manager” will open in front of you.

If all the drivers are installed in your system, then you will see all the device drivers in one column. If any driver is missing then it will have a yellow question mark symbol. You will not have to update by right-clicking on it. Either by downloading and installing this device driver setup from the official site of the system. After that, it will be fine.

Without device drivers, the hardware components of the computer would not be able to function properly.

Examples of Device driver: USB driver, Audio driver, Graphic driver, Touchpad driver, Ethernet driver, etc.

Utility Programs

A utility program is system software that helps perform maintenance and optimization tasks on a computer system. It forms an interface between the operating system and the application software.

This helps in detecting errors or maintenance in the computer. Sometimes there will be some minor problem in your system like the sound is not coming or the internet is not working etc. So, in this type of problem, you first troubleshoot that problem. This troubleshooting software comes under utility software.

Usually, this utility software comes bundled with the operating system. They are designed to perform tasks such as disk clean-up, system backup and troubleshooting, etc.

Programming Language Translators

A programming language translator is a system software that converts high-level language languages to machine-level language. The computer always understands machine-level language and binary bits which are 0’s and 1’s.

We run many programs on the computer which is a high-level language. But the computer does not understand all those programs. That’s why computer converts those high-level programs into binary or machine-level language. Only after that the CPU is able to analyze that program.

All these tasks are possible with the help of the programming language translator i.e. compiler and interpreter in the computer. It comes with the operating system. When a programming language translator converts high-level language into machine-level or binary codes, it is called compilation.

Both compiler and interpreter convert high-level language into machine-level language. Still, the method of working of these two is different. The compiler translates a program at once, but the interpreter translates it line by line.

Examples of programming language translators: GCC (GNU Compiler Collection), Python interpreter, and NASM (Netwide Assembler).

Security Programs

Security software is software designed to protect computer systems from various types of threats, such as viruses, malware, and unauthorized access.

If you use a computer, then you must have heard the name of firewall. This is the one that provides security to the computer. You will find all the settings of the firewall in the control panel of the computer.

You must have access to the Internet on your computers. Through the Internet, many threads try to enter into your computer, but the firewall blocks all of them. Apart from this, even if you install any unwanted software on the computer, it prevents the installation of that software.
