9 Types of Internet Connections Use in our daily life

Do you know how many types of internet connections are used today? Which Internet connection is best for your Internet use? If you are thinking about this then there is no need to worry. We have provided you with detailed information in this article about how many types of internet connections are used today.

So, without delay let’s know about the internet and the types of internet connections we use in our daily life.

What is the Internet?

Nowadays, all of you will have a mobile or laptop and will have an internet connection. The Internet is such a technology that all the people of the world can connect with each other. This can be done through routers and servers.

In other words, two computers or mobiles exchange information through TCP/IP protocol. The connection established between them through this protocol is called the “Internet”. The Internet is the world’s largest network which is spread in every corner of the world.

In common language, we call the internet as Net. It is also called an interconnected network. Nowadays, the internet has become a part of our life. By using the Internet, everyone can share their message on social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.

Computers, mobiles, laptops, or all other devices connected to the Internet have a unique identity. This unique identity is called an IP address. Its full form is Internet Protocol. Due to the unique identity of every device connected to the Internet, the information can reach the right destination.

We use different types of internet connections in computer networks to access the Internet.

  • LAN (Local Area Network)
  • WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network)
  • MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)
  • WAN (Wide Area Network)
  • PAN (Personal Area Network)
  • CAN (Campus Area Network)

Types of Internet Connections

internet connection

Today, most people use the Internet, whether it is in the field of education, business, or entertainment. The Internet has an important contribution in every field and has made all these fields convenient and easy.

Through the Internet, we can get knowledge of any subject whenever we want, we can reach our business more people, and we can connect with our friends and relatives. The Internet has a big role in the field of entertainment also in today’s time. There will be no such area where an internet connection is not used.

There are different types of internet connections. Let us know how many types of internet connections are there.

Best types of internet connections

Dial-up connection/ PSTN connection

When Internet service is provided from a telephone line, it is called a dial-up connection. This type of internet connection is also called a broadband connection in which data connections are established over the public switched telephone network (PSTN) using a modem.

A dial-up connection is a temporary connection that is connected between your computer and the ISP server. In this type of internet connection, you cannot use the Internet and the phone simultaneously.

Basically, It is made using a modem, this connection is cheap that’s why its speed is low. In a dial-up connection, the consumer’s computer is connected to the telephone line, hence it is also called an analogue connection.

For such an internet connection, the user has to dial a number. Only then that system connects to the ISP and the Internet starts running in the system.

ISDN Connection

The full form of ISDN is Integrated Service Digital Network. ISDN is a circuit-switched telephone network system, that allows digital transmission of audio, voice, and data simultaneously.

This technology establishes a connection over telephone lines, to transmit digital signals instead of transmitting analog signals. It offers potentially better voice or data quality rather than an analog phone. Its minimum speed of data transmitting is 64 Kbps and its highest speed is 128 Kbps.

There are three techniques for providing ISDN services:

  1. Basic rate interface (BRI)
  2. Primary rate interface (PRI)
  3. Broadband- ISDN

Leased Line Connection

A leased line internet connection is a dedicated connection that provides internet facility to the user. This connection is mostly given to big companies and offices. Fiber optic cable is used in this for high-quality bandwidth and speed.

In this, bandwidth and internet speed is given as per the need of the user. Therefore, there is no loss to your connection during busy internet hours. It provides a point-to-point connection, allowing the user to get a good internet speed.

The internet speed in this connection ranges from 1 Mbps to 10 Gbps. However, currently, 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps are becoming more prevalent. In this leased line connection, the user is given a dedicated internet speed, due to which the downloading and uploading speeds are identical.

3 types of connections are given in this

  1. Fiber lease line connection
  2. DSL lease line connection
  3. MPLS lease line connection

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)

DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line. This internet connection is provided to the user through a telephone line. Its internet speed depends on its range which is between 128 Kbps to 8 Mbps.

A modem is used to provide the DSL connection. So that the internet can run properly. This is much better than a dial-up connection. Also, the voice quality of the telephone is not affected when you are using the Internet and the telephone at the same time.

Digital Subscriber Line has two types

  • Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line

In ADSL internet connection the downloading speed is higher than the uploading speed. It is mainly used by non-business customers, who have to download a lot of things from the internet. So, this connection is not for business purposes as high bandwidth is required for business purposes. Apart from this, the downloading and uploading speed should not be the same.

  • Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line

Usually, this connection is used in companies. Because video conferences, browsing, downloading, and uploading happen on an infinitely large scale. This SDSL connection is made for that only.

Cable Internet connection

Usually, this cable connection is provided by the cable TV provider. This is a coaxial cable. The cable supplied by the TV cable provider has two connections, one is for the TV connection and the other one is for an Internet connection. it comes and inserts into the modem.

The internet speed of this cable connection ranges from 512 Kbps to 20 Mbps. The Internet gives the speed of the Internet according to how many users are using one place simultaneously.

Fiber-optic connection

Fiber Connection

Fiber optics is a cable with a rout of glass filament inside it. Through that, we can transmit any data to another user. This glass filament is as thin as your hair. You all must know that the ability to transmit the fastest is that of light. Therefore, data is transmitted in the form of light in it.

In this type of internet connection, the data transmits faster than other types of internet connections and the data transmitting speed is not reduced. Nowadays, every internet service provider is providing this type of connection to the user. Through this fiber optic cable, data can be transmitted at the speed of 1 Gbps. That’s why it is a bit more expensive than other internet connections

Wireless and WIFI

A wireless connection is a simple connection that makes it easy to connect your laptop, desktop, mobile, etc. It requires a modem that has an internet connection from the ISP. This modem provides internet to all other devices through WIFI to that internet connection. It does not use a cable connection.

Basically, Wireless connections cannot cover large areas so It depends on the capacity and range of the router. Usually, the range of a wireless router is 150 to 200 meters. The wireless router transmits data using radio frequency. Most wireless routers have an internet range of 5 Mbps to 20 Mbps.

VSAT connection

VSET connection

VSAT is also called a satellite connection of an internet connection. It is mostly used in ATMs. In this regard, the data is transmitted and received in the form of a satellite. It is more expensive than all other connections

VSAT consists of an antenna that is within 1 meter or 3 meters and it receives the signal from the satellite and gives it to the user. One of the advantages of VSAT is that it can provide internet facilities at a place where no other network can reach. It also used in the banking sector

Cellular Internet Connection

Cellular Internet Connection1

As per your knowledge, a cellular internet connection is also called mobile internet. This connection is usually provided by companies that manufacture SIMs, such as Airtel, Jio, BSNL Idea, Vodafone, etc.

Till date, this connection has come in 3 generations, which are the 2nd generation, the 3rd generation, and the 4th generation. A cellular network is a network that covers the whole world. This network is controlled by some of its base stations. It is extended through network towers.

However, you will be able to access this internet connection from your mobile or laptop or system. This connection runs through SIM. As soon as you insert the SIM into your mobile, after, that you will be able to access the phone call and also the internet from that SIM.

If you want to connect mobile internet to your laptop or computer then you can connect it in 2 ways. One is a Hotspot connection and the other is USB tethering. On Hotspot connection, you have to go to the Hotspot option of your mobile and turn it on and then you can connect your laptop via WiFi. In USB tethering, you have to connect your mobile and laptop with a data cable and after that, by turning on the USB tethering option on the mobile, the internet will start running on your laptop.

History of Internet

The Internet was not invented by a single person, many people had a hand in finding the Internet and many scientists and engineers were needed to make it. Leonard Kleinrock first planned to build the Internet, then in 1962 with the help of Robert Taylor, J.C. ARPANET was later used commercially as TELNET in 1974.

The term ‘Internet’ was first used in 1974 to describe a single instruction TCP/IP network spread around the world. It was first used for the US military during the Cold War. In 1969 a network called the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) was launched at the US Department of Defense, which was created by connecting some computers used to send secret information.

In 1982, general rules were made for this network, which were called protocols. This protocol was known as TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol). Now at present lakhs or crores of computers are connected to each other through the internet.

Internet service was first publicly launched in India on 15 August 1995 by VSNL (Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited). Earlier, the Educational Research Network (ERNET) organization established the Internet in 1986 for educational purposes and research in India. had begun. Rediff Mail was the first e-mail website created in India.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Internet
